The history of the Cuban  cigar industry in Key West dates back to 1831. The influx of Cuban cigar makers after 1868 resulted in the establishment of over 80 cigar factories by 1883. They produced over 42,000,000 cigar annually and employed 2,703 cigar workers. 

Advertisement art proliferated with the innovative use of color, embossing and gilding. The promotion of Key West cigars through the use of the finest chromolithographic advertising art available created an economic renaissance which made Key West a thriving Southern boom town.
