Cigar makers

Lectores were originally introduced to Cuban cigar factories in 1864 to entertain workers by reading classical literature, poems, and newspapers. They were the most esteemed members of the Cuban cigar working community. In the factories, they spoke in an elevated podium and everyone in the factory was educated through this readings .

They were the first intellectual and political voices of freedom in Cuba.
